The Viers Mill Church Of God is committed to introducing our neighbors to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and enabling them to grow as His disciples.

We are a small community church nestled among the houses of  the Viers Mill Village located on 12113 Selfridge road in Wheaton, Maryland.  One block from the intersection of Randolph & Veirs Mill road.  Our church has a bright red-lit cross on the steeple that stays on all the time.

Our Pastor; Bishop Darcy W. Abbott and his wife Pat  (  http://www.viersmillcog.org/meet_our_pastor.htm  ) have tended the small church here for eight and one-half years.  They became our Pastor & family on August 16, 1997.    Please come and join us in worship and fellowship.  You will be welcomed in the house of the Lord!

Below Is The Current Bulletin Article For The Week:  (  1/8/2006 ) written by Pastor Abbott.   NOTE:   We have been doing a series on the history of some of our great songs and hymns.  Many of these stories have come from an extensive library that Pastor Abbott has.

FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART:

Good Day my friend; and welcome to the House of the Lord! It is my prayer as always that you and yours are living this day in His will and that He is blessing your path!

I want to continue - if you please - to look at the Christian Hymns that have guided our lives over the years. To date we have looked at some sixteen different hymns in the bulletin. Five of them being Christmas carols. I want to look at one more carol that many of us have sung over the years. That being; The First Noel. Do you know what is the most interesting fact about this song? Well; I will tell you! No body knows who wrote this beautiful Christmas carol. At the top of its page, under the title you will normally find the words: Traditional English Carol. Simply put; no one knows who wrote this song. No other carol carries that fact. The First Noel, sung on a snow-clad Christmas Eve, brings tears to the eyes and a gentle peace to the heart. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. The carol first appeared anonymously in Some Ancient Christmas Carols, published by Davis Gilbert in 1823, and the traditional music evidently came from an unknown source in the west of England.

The poetry is plain and if we were to recite this rather lengthy piece, we’d get only a garbled sense of the Christmas story. There’s no indication in Scripture, for example that the shepherds saw the Wise Men’s star. And for that matter, we do not know that there were only three wise men, and the final verse of the original carol seems abit anticlimactic, but combined with the flow of the music and words; our hearts are strangely warmed by its message. The word "Noel" seems to be a French word with Latin roots ( Natalis ) meaning birthday. The original poem has seven different verses. Below is the last verse:

If we in our time do well we shall be free from death and hell

For God hath prepared for us all a resting place general

Noel, noel, noel, noel; Born is the King of Israel.

Your Friend & Pastor !

from the pestor’s heart:

Two elderly women, Coleen and Melinda, who were rivals in a social circle met at a Christmas party at the country club.

"My dear," said Melinda, "Are those real pearls?"

"They are," replied Coleen.

"Of course the only way I could tell would be for me to bite them," smiled Melinda.

Coleen responded, "Yes, but for that you would need real teeth."

A PRAYER FROM you TO HIM !

Dear Jesus, I come to You asking for help! I come to You needing Your favor and forgiveness. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and for that I am grateful. I also believe that You arose from the dead and that You conquered my enemy, the Devil. Help Me, Jesus! I ask You to forgive me of my sins. I ask You to forgive me of the many times I did what was wrong. Sometimes I say wrong words and sometimes I think wrong thoughts and sometimes I do things that are wrong. I need your forgiveness!! I believe that You are forgiving me even as I ask. Your Word says that You are Faithful and that You will forgive my sins if I will only ask and believe. I am also asking You to help me do things that are right. I will need Your help today and tomorrow and the next day. I want to go the Heaven - I do not want to go to Hell; so PLEASE, Jesus forgive me. I also want to give a problem to You, it is ____________________ . And there is something else I want to give you, it is ____________________ . Thank You for forgiving me and I will try to keep in touch.

Signed: Your newly forgiven child!
